janina pechova: My art reflects the unassuming, understated splendour of the place of my birth - Middle Europe. The gentle undulating green meadows, cornflowers and poppies in the golden fields, ancient settlements and fairy-tale castles on every hill, will often be the settings for my works. My art is unashamedly decorative, evocative, sensual, colourful and optimistic, which tells an often humorous story, set in those familiar surroundings. It would be difficult for me to make any other form of art. Since Africa, with its strong colours and fertile imagination, has become my second home, I often juxtapose these two themes. I use very traditional techniques, etching, monoprint, pen and ink and watercolours. Sitting in a café or a garden, running the background images in my minds eye, the stories and human activities that I depict in my art, reveal themselves to me. Sometimes I dip into visual diaries, kept since childhood, which are by now full of observations and images, ready to be used.
